Digital Certificates

Digital Certificates give authentication to a Web site that is going to be selling goods and services. Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is used to ensure that information is processed in a secure environment. There are two different kinds of Digital Certificates that are available for the Virtual Private Server.
  1. Default Digital Certificate or Shared Certificate - offered through AlpineWeb when you add SSL to your server. This certificate is used when checking out to show that you are in a secure environment.
  2. Digitial Certificate - offered through third party vendors that provide your business with a "stamp of approval" for doing business on the Internet. There are a number of companies that offer this service.
    1. GeoTrust
    2. Equifax
    3. Thawte/VeriSign
Using a certificate from a Signing Authority will still require the need to add SSL to the server for purposes of encryption.
