Server Administration and Management

In many cases, the account holder of a Web Hosting plan is also the Server Administrator. Our Technical support staff is available to help with issues as it relates to the server not operating correctly. However technical support is not responsible for server administration. The Server Administrator is responsible for those tasks.

As a Server administrator, duties include tasks such as:

Creating and managing user accounts
Installing, customizing and managing services such as PHP, MySQL, etc.
Software installation and configuration
Managing Apache Configuration
Log file rotation and management.
Creating and installing Custom Digital Certificates
Customizing and managing Sendmail configuration
Spam and Virus Filtering Solutions
Customizing and managing FTP configuration
Server hardening and Security managment

This is not an exhaustive list of services a Server Administrator performs but does illustrate the difference between technical support which is to "support you in the process" vs. "performing the work for you".

Here's an example. If you want to create a new user account on your Virtual Private Server, we provide extensive online documentation on how to do this. Our Support Technicians will point you to the documentation, but doing the actual work of the administrator does not fall under supporting a customer with technical needs.

Weekly updates of system software to address the latest security issues and bugs
Perform general maintenance of the system to ensure peak performance and reliability
Configure a backup system with retention of data based on your individual business needs
Monitor critical services like HTTP, FTP, POP3, SMTP, and SSH via 24/7 automatic port monitoring
Install various software and assist in the configuration of software to suit your needs
Perform nightly automatic security checks
Troubleshoot installed software and system related problems
