PHP 8.1 is available for all Alpine Hosting Customers.

NOTE: PHP 7.4 reaches End of Life on November 28, 2022. The Supported Versions of PHP can be reviewed here: PHP Supported Versions

With this in mind we urge all customers to upgrade their cPanel accounts to PHP 8.0 or 8.1 if you have not already done so.

Please contact our Support Department for any questions or assistance.

Improvements in PHP 8.1 means significant security and performance increases for websites. In fact, it is estimated that PHP 8.1 offers a 100 percent improvement in speed over PHP 7.4. This major improvement allows website owners to offer their visitors a website that provides the rapid response times that modern web users have come to expect.

For information about supported PHP versions see this page at PHP.net:

How to determine which version of PHP your website is using

If you have an Alpine Hosting plan you can find your PHP version in cPanel. You can login to cPanel from one of two ways:

  1. Login from the AlpineWeb Customer Backroom here:

    https://www.alpineweb.com/backroom/clientarea.php

  2. Login to cPanel directly:

    https://www.your-domain.com/cpanel

After logging in to cPanel, click on the Server Information in the right hand column. This will display the version of PHP your account is using.

Upgrade to the latest version of PHP

It is recommended to test your PHP application before upgrading to a newer version of PHP.

If you website is powered by WordPress we recommend using the WordPress PHP Compatibility Checker Plugin to test your WordPress site for PHP version compatibility.

WordPress PHP Compatibility Checker Plugin

This plugin can help you make an informed decision about the upgrade path.

  1. To upgrade your website to a different version of PHP log in to your cPanel account:

    https://www.my-domain-name.com/cpanel

  2. Once logged in to cPanel navigate to:

    Software > MultiPHP Manager

  3. Next, select the checkbox next to the domain(s) you wish to upgrade, select the PHP version - we recommend PHP 8.1 - and click on Apply.

If you encounter a "Service Unavailable" error message immediately after upgrading and visiting your website, refresh your browser and your web site should load properly.

If you encounter any other problems there may be a software incompatibility in your website software. You can always revert back to a previous PHP version if necessary.

We think you'll be pleased with the performance increase.
